The Designer’s objective is to spearhead and advance the creative vision, with the aesthetic of our target customer in mind, season after season. The designers work closely with product development, manufacturing and merchandising to direct the line and set the creative strategy each season. The Designer’s role is key to supporting the daily maintenance, organization and inter-departmental communication from the beginning to end of the design cycle.
Key responsibilities of the Designer will include the following:
1. RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT
• Research trends, colours, fabrics and silhouettes for the upcoming seasons through shopping the market, magazines, on-line sites and trend services.
• Work with Brand Merchants and Design Director on Overall Objectives, Theme and Trend
• Work in the Retail stores to gather information, feedback and comments about designs and sales.
• Manage Fabric and Trim source sheets for Sourcing Department.
• Manage Colour dip allocations, lab dips and requests with Sourcing and Colour Department.
2. CREATIVE STRATEGY
• Work with Brand Merchants and Design Director on development of theme, trend & colour boards presentations which represent the Brand’s vision and direction
• Work with Applied Graphics and Print and Pattern Departments in the direction and final developments each season
3. SOURCING PASS & DEVELOPMENT
• Work with Brand Merchants and Design Director to research and select fabrics, yarns, washes and treatments for the upcoming season
4. LINE PLANNING
• Work with Brand Merchants and Design Director on line plan development, updates and presentation materials
5. FORM & FUNCTION APPROVAL
• Work with Brand Managers and Design Director in the preparation and presentation of collections to move forward in the development process
6. DESIGN PASS
• Work with Technical Design to outline and communicate each style and collection to ensure to meet calendar deadlines throughout the development process
• Fit garments with a team of product developers, technicians and pattern makers and communicate the necessary changes
7. ITEM DEVELOPMENT & EXECUTION
• Work with Brand Merchants and Design Director on fittings and approvals according to business objectives
• Work with Brand Merchants and Design Director in the evaluation of samples for fit, measurement, pattern shaping, quality and functionality to ensure best fit, durability and proper styling
• Ability to support multiple seasons and collections at any given time meeting deadlines
8. APPLIED GRAPHICS DEVELOPMENT & CONFIRMATION
• Provide support and facilitate in the process of approving graphics and product packaging for collections
9. LINE MANAGEMENT
• Support managing the collection appropriately through facilitation of add-ins, cancellations and changes
10. PROMOTE THE BRAND
• Support creative art direction input to Marketing and facilitate the design vision in terms of theme, mood, venue, model, hair, and make-up
Additional duties and responsibilities may be added or modified as required throughout the course of employment.
The Designer will possess the following qualifications:
• Completion of a diploma or university degree in Fashion or Textile Design
• 3 – 5 years of women’s apparel design experience working for a fashion apparel retailer
• Previous experience with broad range of women’s fashion: e.g., junior, active wear, contemporary and ready-to-wear
• Demonstrated technical ability in apparel construction in all types of fabrics and trims, fit and patterns, tailoring and dyeing techniques
• Demonstrated understanding of and experience sourcing and selecting wide range of fabrics and trims
• Prior experience creating technical drawings and flats, line specification sheets and technical PR packages
• Strong technical drawing, sketching and rendering skills
• Excellent sense of style, knowledge of fashion forecasting and trend analysis, keen eye for global trends, colours, fabrics and details
• Comprehensive understanding of target market’s aesthetic (15-35 year old women)
• Expertise with MS Office and Adobe Creative Suite (Design, Illustrator and Photoshop)
• Excellent communication & presentation skills – written and verbal
• Proven ability to work effectively with cross functional/departmental partners and teams
• Excellent time management skills, planning and organizational skills, problem solving skills
