Job Description / Duties

Role: Director, Materials, Swim & Intimates, Technical Colour & Textile Design (NOC 0113)
Salary: $150,000 - $200,000/year and Benefits (Extended Health, Dental, Vision, Disability, Life Insurance) + may be eligible for bonuses and salary increases, if applicable
Hours: 45 hours/week, Full-time, Permanent
Location of work: Aritzia Support Office (#118-611 Alexander St. Vancouver, BC, V6A 1E1)

As the Director, Materials for Swim & Intimates and Technical Colour & Textile Design, you will play a pivotal role in the development of all materials for the Swim and Intimates categories, as well as leading the team in charge of the technical application of colour and textile design on all materials.

1. MATERIALS STRATEGY - SWIM & INTIMATES
To determine the approach for sourcing fabric and trims that fulfill the design vision
a) Materials Calendar – Establish the ideal calendar and lifecycle for materials production to minimize lead times
b) Materials Costing – Establish the standard ranges for materials costing to maximize margin
c) Materials Allocation - Lead supplier assignments to establish suppliers that will deliver on the best quality, lead-time, and cost
d) Materials Sustainability - Lead in ensuring materials production is in compliance with Aritzia sustainability standards
e) Matching Standards – Establish the acceptable tolerance levels for matching colors and textile design

2. MATERIALS DEVELOPMENT - SWIM & INTIMATES
To secure the best possible quality against defined standards, using industry leading practices
a) Materials Techniques – Lead the team to evaluate and deliver against the most appropriate materials application techniques
b) Suitability – Lead the team to ensure that materials are fit for purpose for each garment
c) Material Detail Sheet – Lead the team to expertly capture materials specifications on the materials detail sheet
d) Bill of Materials – Lead the team to expertly capture the individual components of each material in a style
e) Sample Yardage – Lead the team to maintain, place, and report on purchase orders for sample fabric yardage, and manage the maintenance of the fabric sample library
f) Development Samples – Lead the team to request sourcing samples as needed
g) Standardization – Lead the team to manage the technical/bulk hangers and development/bulk testing
h) System Set Up – Lead the team to upload required data into the Product Lifecycle Management system

3. MATERIALS LEAD-TIME - SWIM & INTIMATES
To secure the best possible lead times for materials without compromising quality
a) Raw Materials Positioning – Lead the team to optimize raw materials positioning to minimize lead times of initial orders and potential re-orders
b) Transportation Time – Lead the team to minimize transportation time from raw material supplier to finished good supplier

4. MATERIALS COSTING - SWIM & INTIMATES
To secure the best possible margins without compromising lead-time and quality
a) Quantity – Lead the team to work with raw materials suppliers to agree to the optimal quantity of yardage ordered to optimize cost
b) Minimums – Lead the team to work with raw materials suppliers to reduce the minimum order quantity required
c) Surcharges – Lead the team to work with raw materials suppliers to minimize surcharges as part of supplier agreements
d) Widths/Wastage – Lead the team to work with raw material suppliers to minimize the amount of wasted materials in garment production
e) Financing – Lead the team to work with raw material suppliers to secure the most advantageous financing agreements for Aritzia
f) Transportation Cost – Lead the team to work with raw material suppliers to secure the best transportation pricing
g) Currency/Exchange Rates – Lead in optimization of margins through strategic management of currency/exchange rates in fabric orders

5. TECHNICAL COLOUR AND TEXTILE DESIGN
To deliver colors and textile designs that fulfill the creative vision
a) Application Viability – Lead the team to evaluate the viability of technical colour and textile design applications on materials
b) Technique Verification – In Partnership with Creative Colour & Textile Design teams, lead the team to verify the techniques that will be used to apply colours and textile designs to materials
c) Predictive Technical Testing – Lead the team to execute pre-production predictive testing of application of colours and textile designs on materials, as needed
d) Standardization – Lead the team to enable consistent application of colours and textile designs
e) Lap Dip/Strike Off Request – Lead the team to request lap dip/strike offs to enable standardization
f) Lap Dip/Strike Off Assessment – Lead the team to evaluate returned lab dips/strike offs
g) Technical Approval – Lead the team to approve lab dip/strike off matching within the agreed upon matching standards
h) Shade Bands – Lead the team to develop shade bands to indicate approved variances in colour and textile designs

6. MATERIALS PRODUCTION MANAGEMENT – SWIM, INTIMATES, TECHNICAL COLOUR & TEXTILE DESIGN
To ensure the high quality, timely, and cost-effective delivery of all materials prior to finished good production
a) Quality Management – Lead in the careful management of the materials production process to ensure high quality results
b) Timeline Management - Lead in ensuring that bulk fabric is delivered to finished good suppliers based on agreed-upon timeline in accordance with product lifecycle
c) Partner Management - Lead in the partnership with Production and suppliers to ensure that materials production is proceeding on plan and on schedule
d) Financial Management – Lead in ensuring that the agreed upon costs are adhered to or improved on through production process
e) Process Management – Lead in managing materials development and production against the established process, problem solve in-production issues, and improve process to ensure industry leading practices
f) Tools/System Management – Lead in managing materials production using Aritzia tools and systems, and identify opportunities for improvement

7. DEPARTMENT MANAGEMENT
Work with the appropriate Business Support partners to seamlessly lead the day-to-day function of the department in support of corporate objectives, while enabling progressive career development and an incredible employee experience
a) People Management – Lead and advance our people, maximizing their results through the 10 areas: Planning, Hiring, Onboarding, Evaluating, Developing, Engaging, Scheduling, Compensating, Transitioning, and Relating
b) Operations Management – Lead the day-to-day department priorities and net new initiatives by championing quality output, encouraging timely results, implementing a methodical approach, and setting up clear accountability across the team
c) Technology Management – Set the standard for high quality data management, ensure current systems are maintained and continuously improved, and identify, evaluate, and drive opportunities to secure future investments in technology
d) Finance Management – Lead the team to proactively maximize the department's financial performance, strategically leading opportunities to drive revenue growth and capitalize on smart spending opportunities
e) Analytics Management – Leverage reporting to identify opportunities, predict future outcomes, and improve the department's and organization's performance

Qualifications / Required Skills

The Director, Materials for Swim & Intimates and Technical Colour & Textile Design will possess the following qualifications:

• Completion of bachelor degree in engineering, business administration, or a related field
• 8+ years’ experience in global apparel manufacturing, sourcing, and production with a fashion apparel retailer
• Minimum 5 years of managerial experience overseeing and supervising a team
• Experience in raw materials management from design concept innovation to purchasing strategy
• Experience managing the execution of seasonal calendars and activities
• Experience working with fabric, color and print technical activities for swimwear, intimates and apparel
• Experience building and executing a global raw materials strategy & matrix
• Direct-to-vendor, agency and in-house sourcing office experience required
• Extensive knowledge of and experience with garment manufacturing/production/sourcing methods, construction, trims and fabrication
• Strong global sourcing and production knowledge; and extensive understanding of the sourcing and production cycle
• Extensive experience with cost negotiations with domestic and international vendors
• Experience managing large budgets with fiscal leadership, understanding global cost structures, performing cost and margin analyses and preparing related reports
• Strong management skills and proven ability to work effectively with cross functional/departmental partners and teams
• Proven leadership abilities and excellent interpersonal and communication skills – both verbal and written
• Excellent organizational and time management skills with ability to prioritize
• Ability and willingness to travel internationally
