Job Description / Duties

Role: Director, Styling (NOC 0016)

Hours: 45 hours/week, Full-time, Permanent
Location of work: Aritzia Support Office (#118-611 Alexander St. Vancouver, BC, V6A 1E1)

As the leader of the Styling Department, you will lead and motivate the team responsible for bringing the Product and Marketing vision to life through styling. You will play a pivotal role in managing the Styling resources and strategy, while ensuring an elevated and consistent styling aesthetic across all channels.

Throughout the styling process, in addition to styling approval, you will play a key role in the approval of the following:

• Model Roster
• Hair and Make-up Talent
• Hair and Make-Up Execution

1. STYLING STRATEGY
To define the styling strategy and ensure alignment with priorities and trends.
a) Editorial – Establish the strategy for styling editorial shoots.
b) On-Model PC – Establish the strategy for styling on-model Product Catalogue shoots.
c) Off-Model PC – Establish the strategy for styling off-model Product Catalogue shoots.
d) Social – Establish the strategy for styling Social shoots.
e) VIP – Establish the strategy for styling VIP clients, celebrities and influencers.
f) Retail – Establish the strategy for styling outfits in our retail environment.

2. ART DIRECTION
To conceive and develop the styling art direction, setting the seasonal vision.
a) Hair and Makeup – Determine the hair and makeup vision for the season and ensure successful execution on set.
b) Styling– Determine the styling vision for the season, and ensure successful execution on set.

3. WARDROBING
To assemble outfits.
a) Primary Item – Ensure the right product and colours are selected for styling.
b) Secondary Item – Ensure complementary products are selected to highlight the primary item.

4. DETAILING
To refine outfits.
a) Tucking – Validate that garments are tucked as per our guidelines.
b) Rolling – Validate that garments are rolled as per our guidelines.
c) Pinning – Validate that garments are pinned as per our guidelines.
d) Layering – Validate that garments are layered as per our guidelines.
e) Cuffing – Validate that garments are cuffed as per our guidelines.

5. ACCESSORIZING
To elevate outfits.
a) Footwear – Approve footwear selections (shoes, socks, hosiery) and ensure each are paired with the appropriate outfit.
b) Headwear – Approve headwear selections (hats, toques, hair accessories) and ensure each are paired with the appropriate outfit.
c) Neckwear – Approve neckwear selections (scarfs, shawls) and ensure each are paired with the appropriate outfit.
d) Handwear – Approve handear selections (mitts, gloves) and ensure each are paired with the appropriate outfit.
e) Jewelry – Approve jewelry selections and each are paired with the appropriate outfit.
f) Bags – Approve bag selections and each are paired with the appropriate outfit.
g) Belts – Approve belt selections and ensure each are paired with the appropriate outfit.

6. TECHNICAL STYLING
To ensure the intended purpose of each garment is considered and styled to showcase the product.
a) Item Visibility – Ensure the primary item is visible and highlighted within the outfit.
b) Seasonality – Ensure the complete outfit is seasonally appropriate.
c) Functionality – Ensure technical features and functions are highlighted within the outfit.
d) Balance – Ensure a balance of colours and products are featured across the shoot.

7. DEPARTMENT MANAGEMENT
Work with the appropriate Business Support partners to seamlessly lead the day-to-day function of the department in support of corporate objectives, while enabling progressive career development and an incredible employee experience
a) People Management – Manage our people, maximizing their results through the 10 areas: Planning, Hiring, Onboarding, Evaluating, Developing, Engaging, Scheduling, Compensating, Transitioning, and Relating
b) Operations Management – Manage the day-to-day department priorities by ensuring quality output, timely results, a methodical approach, and clear accountability across the team
c) Technology Management – Validate high quality data management, ensure current systems are used appropriately, and identify opportunities for technology innovations to advance the business
d) Finance Management – Hold the team accountable to maximize the department's financial performance, driving revenue generating activities and minimize controllable expenses
e) Analytics Management – Leverage reporting to identify opportunities and improve the expected results of the department

Throughout the course of employment, additional duties and responsibilities may be amended as required.

Qualifications / Required Skills

The Director, Styling will possess the following qualifications:

• Completion of post-secondary courses in Fashion Design, and/or Fashion Styling, or a related field
• 8+ years’ of fashion styling experience working for a fashion apparel retailer
• Minimum 5 years of managerial experience overseeing and supervising a styling team
• Experience working in-house at a global luxury women’s fashion brand
• Experience dealing with models, photographers, and studios
• Prior experience providing styling direction on fashion campaigns for a fashion apparel retailer or within the fashion industry
• Excellent sense of style and high fashion aesthetics
• Proven ability to translate vision to execution
• Knowledge of fashion forecasting and trends
• Proven ability to work cross-functionally with different departmental teams
• Proven leadership abilities and excellent communication & presentation skills – both written and verbal
• Excellent organizational, planning and time management skills with a high level of attention to detail
• Alignment and approval of creative portfolio against company aesthetic
