The Denim Designer is responsible for supporting in the creation of original concepts in style, colour and fabric by interpreting fashion trends with brand identity, as well as supporting the design team with styles and system maintenance. They are accountable for leading our vision for denim, identifying and applying trends from the external inspiration landscape and designing denim styles across our brands each season. They partner cross-functionally to ensure we have a balanced, saleable and on-trend assortment of denim products that speak to our target customer.
Key responsibilities of the Denim Designer will include the following:
• Supporting the Denim Director with all parts of the design process
• Responsible for designing denim categories from sketch through bulk approval
• Sketch with technical accuracy new styles and silhouettes for the season
• Set up style garment worksheets in Aritzia’s system
• Review and comment on wash, fabric, trim and art submits from Production and Fabric teams
• Review denim washes and make directional comments and approvals, alongside the Senior Director
• Develop trims and pitch colourways to CAD
• Maintain all style updates; black & white sketch, colour and art updates, line plans, tech packs and PLM
• Assists in all fittings and updates all comments
• Research fabric direction
• Researches the competitive market in preparation of the upcoming season
• Contribute to seasonal design presentation and set-up
The job will evolve and additional duties and responsibilities may be added or modified as required throughout the course of employment.
The Denim Designer will possess the following qualifications:
• Completion of a 2-year diploma or higher in Fashion or Textile Design
• 5+ years of industry experience in women’s apparel design
• 4+ years’ experience in women’s specific denim design
• Previous experience with broad range of women’s fashion: e.g., junior, casual, active wear, contemporary and ready-to-wear
• Demonstrated technical ability in garment construction in all types of fabrics and trims, tailoring, pattern making and pattern cutting
• Demonstrated understanding of and experience sourcing and selecting wide range of fabrics and trims
• Prior experience creating technical drawings and flats, line specification sheets and technical PR packages
• Strong technical drawing, sketching and rendering skills
• Excellent sense of style, knowledge of fashion forecasting and trend analysis, keen eye for global trends, colours, fabrics and details
• Expertise with MS Office and Adobe Creative Suite (Design, Illustrator and Photoshop)
• Excellent communication & presentation skills – written and verbal
• Proven ability to work effectively with cross functional/departmental partners and teams
